For this project, I had to choose between doing 2D or 3D character. I choose to do 3D because that is what I am interested from the beginnig of this semester. I used Maya to modeling my 3D character and also the animation part as well. I only had a little bit of experience in Maya so this project will be very challenging for me.
Model Name: GT-01
Made by: Unknown
Weight: 1,000 kg
GT-01 is a super computer robot coming from unknown galaxy. It can run and fly more than 1000 km/hour. Using the light from the sun to charge.
I decided to do a robot so I went to look at the images on internet to get some inspiration to do my robot sketches. I started to do a moodboard which have images of robot from the cartoon and game that I have interact when I was a kid.
My first initial sketches, I took the inspiration from the cartoon animation called The Castle in the Sky. However, I think it is going to be too difficult for me to modeling this sketches. So I want to make something that is less complicate to modeling.
I gave it less complicate such as round eyes and easier concept on the body, arms and legs. As I said, I am a beginner in Maya software so I want to do something that is not over difficult for me to start.
Before modeling, I need to have 2D perspective drawing of my front and side of my robot. I used Photoshop to make this scale perspective drawing because I can use the ruler tool to make sure everything is in the right order. I have to make sure that scale of my robot both front and side way look the same.
I did each part of my robot seperately because when it come to animation I think it will be easier because I can animate each body part freely.
After finish the modeling in Maya, I used the software called Keyshot to put the texture and also render my robot into realistic looking robot standing on the street.
The video below is the my robot animation waking cycle. In my opion the robot animation was not really that good, I have a hard time understanding the concept of walking cycle in animation. However, I want to keep working on this project and also try the make a better one.
For the industry choice, I believe my robot would fit any kid cartoon because it has a friendly kind of looking and hero perspective. It might be able to go into gaming, however, I think I will have to work more on the modelling part and animation.
